They do not realize that a myth is dead if it no longer lives and grows.” C G Jung from The Red Book
Myths must be kept alive. The people who can keep it alive are the artists of one kind or another. . . For it is the artist who brings the images of mythology to manifestation, & without images (whether mental or visual) there is no mythology.

I believe that legends and myths are largely made of 'truth,' & indeed present aspects of it that can only be received in this mode, & long ago certain truths and modes of this kind were discovered & must reappear.
J. r. r. tolkien

A living myth grows

Before Jung entered an intensive period of soul exploration and  creation (TRB), his soul asked him what myth he lived or "does man live nowdays," and he reflected "we no longer have any myth." Yet, Jung said: "Myth is the natural & indispensable intermediate stage between unconscious and conscious." We need myth and mythologizing (creating myth) to evolve consciousness & live.
The question of what myth we live individually and collectively guides us to discover and create a living myth to live by.. So like Jung, we integrate dreams, play, synchronicity, fantasy, yoga, journaling, active imagination and intuition as we travel on this mythic journey. As we travel, we return to a past where we were "still linked by myth with the world of the ancestors, and thus with nature truly experienced and not merely from the outside." Our return resurrects myths from the unconscious to confront our shadows and choose our fate, as Jung said:

"Myths which day has forgotten continue to be told by night.''

As we confront a dark night of the soul, torn asunder, we remember that it was in perceiving the archetypal wholeness of unity consciousness (in a mandala) that Jung transcended the false boundaries of material separation by identifying with a larger global and cosmic whole.

"The need for mythic statements is satisfied when we frame a view of the world which adequately explains the meaning of human existence in the cosmos, a view which springs from our psychic wholeness, from the co-operation between the conscious and unconscious." C G  Jung

We need a healing mythology

Myth inspires us and gives us direction. It tells us who we are and what we can do. If we believe that we are separate from nature or sinful by nature, how does that create in the world? If healing is based on wholeness and god (goodness, creation . . . ) is all (omnipresent, omniscient . . . ) we must find a way to accept and embrace all of ourselves and all of life. How can we love and forgive? What in our beliefs holds us back from healing?

Heather

& her experience of myth as a way to follow soul

Myths have always fascinated Heather, testifying to the archetypal patterns that emerge throughout time to bridge between the transcendent Sky Father above & immanent Earth Mother below. Integrating myths from around the world, she focuses on the intersection of creativity & myth in the creation story & ourselves as mythic creators. It is this emergent power of mythic creation or mythopoesis that is our true instructor as we follow upon mythic images like steppingstones of an unfolding story. In her classes, Heather has seen myths emerge naturally in a way that is fun.

Your Myth

Which will probably surprise you

When she began exploring her myth, Heather hoped to be the virgin huntress Diana (virgin meaning her power was her own) or Inanna who descended into the underworld. Essentially, kick ass. But what came to her was the Slavic myth of Baba Yaga from childhood nightmares. Yet, the more she sat & played with the myth, the more it made sense, & Heather came to realize that this was not only her myth but favorite myth: a story of the Dark Mother who initiates through the mysteries of death & rebirth, claiming the power of light birthed from the darkness. To bring it to the world.

Myth is personal & cultural

Personal myth is a story you tell yourself (and that you were told) to make sense and meaning of your life & world to guide you as you navigate your life experience. It is created unconsciously as you grow, incorporating words and beliefs from your family & community. In this way, personal myths are informed by the broader cultural, ecological & cosmological myths. While we live in the larger myths, we have the ability to reach beyond past myths and molds to see new emergent ways of being in and of the world.

Live Your Myth

Lived experience

Embody and live your insights in your life & world. Live it.
A culture without mythology is not really a civilization.
Vilayanur S Ramachandran
Myths are public dreams, dreams are private myths.
Joseph Campbell

Your past creates your future

Myths bridge the past, present and future, connecting us to each other and the world, evolving us through the ages. Returning to prehistory, they extend back beyond words to the oral traditions that rooted us to each other and the earth, generation after generation evolving from the genetic or primordial Eve (whatever your belief). Myths incorporate science and spirituality, blending creation and evolution in the individuation of the earth. Connecting us to past ways of relating, we remember we are a part of not apart from the world. In this connection, myths are essential to the continuation of our species and other species . . . to the creation of a sustainable world of co-creation.

Myth is inclusive

Blending elements of legends, fairytales and folktales (which are already blended), we create a myth as our story, combining all of the elements in one myth:
  • magic and realistic, secular and religious
  • dualistic and unifying, destructive and creative
  • historic and imagined, past and future
  • multicultural and transdisciplinary (include anything)

Myths of love versus fear

They connect us to each other and the world, evolving us through the ages . . . but they can also hold us back in the past. As we have become more aware of our interconnection through quantum physics, genetics, neurology and technology, we are also more aware of the cosmos around us and the likelihood of other life. The world is accelerating its change, and we can't deny our creative connection. Our mythic perspective is holistic & symbolic.

A structure to CONTAIN the process

This process is contained by your soul but also by 3 circles of support made by you and your group. Each circle expands with you as you create your opus or soul journal, designed to offer different levels of containment as you transform. These circles protect and support you as you explore and create your myth. Embrace and create them in your own way.

Create & dedicate your space.

You will create an art studio, creativity altar, and art as your "church" and "cathedral," a place to commune with your soul. This is a place for renewal and retreat whether creating art, lighting a candle, meditating, or doing gentle yoga. These spaces cocoon you as an alchemical container of transformation through your process, nurturing your body and a body of art.

Create your space

Myths do not happen all at once. They do not spring forth whole into the world. They form slowly, rolled between the hands of time until their edges smooth, until the saying of the story given enough weight to the words--to the memories. [We create myths together]
V E Schwab
I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge... myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death.
robert fulghum
The Value of myth is that it takes all the things you know and restores to them the rich significance which has been hidden by the veil of familiarity.

A home for all

With modern media and technology, we have a sense of our interconnected whole that our ancestors couldn't imagine. We are no longer the warring tribes of the past, yet we face unprecedented resource conflict as the climate becomes more severe and erratic. How can a new mythology help us to create an economy of sharing and caring in which need not greed is the driving force? Look to the world around you to imagine it as a home for all.
mythic Revolution

Create your myth to overcome  oppression

myths evolve

Example: Jesus

First depicted as a child in nature surrounded by animals and holding a shepherds staff like Hermes, Jesus became the image of a bearded Zeus on his throne.
Myths politicize

Example: nations

All national myths create a sense of superiority and manifest destiny through symbolic narratives to reinforce the belief that they are chosen and justified.
Myths demonize

Example: women

Myths evolve over thousands of years, bridging cultures and marking social evolution. So past women of power are often changed into baby eating demons in myth.
The myths underlying our culture and underlying our common sense have not taught us to feel identical with the universe, but only parts of it, only in it, only confronting it--aliens. [It is time to become one with it]
Alan watts

New consciousness & cosmology

Not only are we aliens in our own world but we now have an understanding of life beyond our earth. How does this information shape our consciousness and cosmology? Myths from the past have taken into account what we would now call aliens. What does it mean to be beyond our planet? How do we understand the relationship of the kingdoms of nature? What lies beyond? The questions of our day are answered by our mythology.

Shame and shadow

Myths hold both our disease and remedy in images of shadow and light. From the casting out of Adam and Eve from Eden and nature to the schism between Isaac and Ishmael, myths are family stories in need of therapy (healing). They call us to address our core wounds and complexes.
"Shame is a soul-eating emotion." C G Jung

Creating and created

We assume inherited myths without questioning their beliefs and the patterns they create. These myths are dead if they are not growing in us and our lives. They are destructive if we do not make them conscious, creating myths of our own. "Myths which are believed in tend to become true." George Orwell
Is it not time that the Christian mythology, instead of being wiped out, was understood symbolically?

Myths are the world's dreams. They are archetypal dreams and deal with great human problems. Myths and dreams come from the same place. They come from the realizations of some kind that then have to find expression in symbolic form. Myths are public dreams, dreams are private myths.
Joseph campbell

Duality and unity

Healing is wholeness

In creation myths all is one and then differentiates.
Myth is more individual and expresses life more precisely than does science.

Archetypal images

Archetypes include mythic roles like the hero, ally, mentor, trickster, guardian, wise old man or woman, shadow, psychopomp or shapeshifter. The images that represent these roles are powerful, helping us connect with the archetypal energy they represent. While the energy is rooted in the collective unconscious or psyche, the forms or images the energy takes are unique to us. A snake may be a common theme but it will have a unique interpretation, meaning and vision for you.
True myth may serve for thousands of years as an inexhaustible source of intellectual speculation, religious joy, ethical inquiry, and artistic renewal

Mythic knowledge is cartographic.

Myths map a journey and a map can help you orient and find your way in your life. So, I use maps to help guide us from step to step, creating a container or space for our creativity, gathering our supplies and centering ourselves in our soul and a journal practice. From there, each week brings a new lesson that characterizes the stage of the path, from ethics to shadow work to the soul's symbolic language of the unconscious. Every week has guidance established to guide you. Like participants in a trust building exercise, you need to lean into this.

Your soul brings you a mythic vision

Jung said that you cannot go directly into the unconscious but if you create, unconsciously with your hands your soul would bring you a vision. Imagination has the roots magi for magic and image, & it is the heart of this visionary path. As you walk you are activating your imagination and remembering how to play with your soul's images that guide you. Open your eyes, heart, and mind to a new way of seeing and being. Learn to navigate by starlight through the dark night of the soul.

Your images guide you.

Imagination has a shared root with image and magi for magus, magician, and magic. Images are the language and wealth of the soul, drawn from the depths of the collective unconscious. They speak with the power of the world soul and what Jung called the "magical value of art." Your images are symbolic and natural, emerging with their own color, shape, composition, and form.

Share your story with others

Bridging head and heart, this course follows in Jung's footsteps as he followed his soul into the wilds of his psychological nature to reconnect with the natural world. Because creativity expresses in our nature and in nature, this is an eco-art therapeutic path to wholeness--to the whole world. It is about your transformative growth, patterned after the perennial rhizome planted in the rich earth of your imagination to grow out of you in art.
"I immersed myself in nature, crawled, as it were, into the very essence of nature and away from the whole human world. . . The only important thing is to follow nature.” C G Jung “God left the world unfinished: the pictures unpainted. The songs unsung. Problems unsolved. That man might know the joys of creation.” Thomas S. Monson

Connect to the soul's creative nature

Images connect our nature to nature because we are a part of nature. So these courses work and play with the nature of our body. Drawing upon our psychological and physiological evolution toward visual evolution and primacy, the coursework combines visual and verbal imagery to maximize our whole brain and body learning. Just as images are the wealth and language of the soul, they are the language we speak in our creativity throughout the coursework. You are learning the unique language of your soul's images that are both visual and verbal.

The soul's ethic is authenticity

The soul's communication is symbolic and imagistic, embodied and imaginal. Jung said that his soul did not have speech centers and let her use his to speak, and studies have found that during spiritual experiences speech is not generated in normal speech centers. Nor is core wounding reached by speech. Both are accessed through the imagistic and embodied language of the soul. So, this soul path combines visual and verbal imagery in the way of the soul (the picture superiority effect) in which words are symbolic and metaphoric images, combined with visual art. When Jung's soul referred to The Red Book as art, she meant all of it, words and paintings as images.
